Jefferson's reaction to the murder isn't a reaction really. he is incredibly stunned and cannot comprehend what brother and bear did. he freezes and this is why he is blamed for the murder. although his attorney does try to explain to the court, in a racist way, that Jefferson doesn't know any better and that he is not smart enough to commit such a crime. this is true which you can see for yourself and judge for your self when and if you read the end of the book where it is from Jefferson's perspective, well from his journal's perspective.
