How do Catherine and Fredric feel about each other?

Initially they are hesitant to have any strong feelings for one another; she, especially, has lost someone to the war and does not want to become involved again. However, the eventually fall in love, run away from the war, and Catherine becomes pregnant. By the end, of course, she dies and the baby dies as well, so Fredric feels the loss of everything.
