The other children in the community are not allowed to play or interact with the other children in the community. The girls are shunned because their mother is a washerwoman, and their father is rumored to be in prison. Mothers even went so far as to tell Mrs. Kelvey that their children were not to speak to hers.

They were the daughters of a spry, hardworking little washerwoman, who went about from house to house by the day. This was awful enough. But where was Mr. Kelvey ? Nobody knew for certain. But everybody said he was in prison. So they were the daughters of a washerwoman and a gaolbird.

Lil gasped, then she said, " Your ma told our ma you wasn't to speak to us."
