Torvald trusts Nora implicitly; he expects the truth from her and believes she tells him the truth. The fact that she lies to him about something as nondescript as the cdonsumption of macaroons sets up the larger and more important lies she tells him later in the play. Deception becomes a part of her relationship with Torvald in the same way his complacency and belief in her becomes a part of his own.
