I think Scrooge was awakened, literally and spiritually, by the ghost of Christmas past. The Ghost of Christmas Past not only displays his power to Scrooge, he introduces the lessons that will make Scrooge a dynamic character at the end of the play. The memories allow Scrooge to begin reflecting on his life and his past mistakes.
