Fred tells his wife and his sisters he feels sorry for Scrooge, since his miserly, hateful nature deprives him of pleasure in life. I think Fred has a point here. It is easy to hate someone that is full of hate. Fred is empathetic and sees Scrooge's misery. He feels sorry that his uncle has no happiness in his life.
