Why does winston see the proles as human beings?

Winston notes "The proles are human beings. We are not human." Winston says this as he comes to realize that he and Julia have become numb to the reality around them; they've become hardened and uncaring. The Proles were still human because they had feelings; they had families, and they knew what it was to feel and act on their emotions.
