Winston cannot fathom anybody in the Outer Party would dare to express emotions like that. The mere thought of love, lust, and loyalty was enough to be vaporized by the party. At first, Winston thinks it is a trap by the thought police. Young and attractive women are frequently used by the thought police to lure and trap men.
