Winston views the party as an ominous controlling force. He hates the party and he hates what they have done to society. At the same time Winston explores the motives and philosophy of the party in an attempt to understand their motivations. Winston considers Parsons imbecilic. Parsons takes the Party at face value and simply follows everything he is told to believe.
