What does Winston want the old man to tell him about? Why?

Winston is searching for what life was really like before the revolution. He wants to know if the history books are accurate or if historical information had been changed by the party. Winston is also pretty obsessed with the past, a time before the party. The old man isn't of much help. He just wants to drink and talk about meaningless things.
