Winston likes the fact that his dream of his mother and sister dying evokes emotion within him. It is an emotion full of guilt and terror, that is the difficult part, but at least he feels something. Winston usually feels dead inside. Emotions of guilt, loyalty, and heartbreak were emotions of the past. Winston wanted to feel them even though they were horrible.
