O'Brien:

'You are thinking,' he said, 'that my face is old and tired. You are thinking that I talk of power, and yet I am not even able to prevent the decay of my own body. Can you not understand, Winston, that the individual is only a cell? The weariness of the cell is the vigour of the organism. Do you die when you cut your fingernails?' Part 3 Chapter 3

O'Brien has taken a keen interest in Winston because he is interested or perhaps obsessed with Winston's keen intellect. O'Brien feels that Winston's intelligence rivals or even surpasses his own. O'Brien has watched Winston so intently over seven years that he knows Winston's thought patterns. Like a game of chess, he predicts Winston's responses with accuracy. O'Brien knows that Winston will question the Party's omnipotence when O'Brien himself decays with age.
