I think Orwell, ironically, is warning readers about things that are happening today. "Fake News", media bias, political manipulation, brain washing of the masses are tangible aspects of our society. The term Big Brother has become a common term in our increasingly watched society. Orwell saw these disturbing aspects of human nature that he saw in society at the time.
