Winston believed or rather wanted to believe that any hope for revolution lay with the Proles. The Proles made up 80% of the population. If they really rebelled, the Party could do nothing about it. Unfortunately the Proles are too busy with their children, lotteries, alcohol, pornography.....to really care about politics or how their lives could be better if others were in charge. Hey, that sounds strangely familiar!
