Winston thinks that the drunk woman could be the right age, height, and build to be his mother. There is a disconnect between Winston and his family, especially his mother. Winston always feels the heavy burden of guilt over how nasty a boy he used to be. He wonders what happened to her. The drunk prole in the cell serves as a disconnect between the mother he knew and the woman she might have been.
