Eleven years prior to events in this chapter, Winston had seen a picture of Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford . O'Brien shows Winston a copy of that picture. He then throws it in the incinerator and tells Winston that the picture never existed. O'Brien changes Winston's reality in that moment. Winston doubts his thinking and memory.
