Winston writes about his visits to the Prole neighbourhood in his diary. Both are an expression of rebellion against the Party. Both offer Winston some respite to the constant numbness he feels. Visiting the Prole section is a physical manifestation of many of the thoughts he writes down. Visiting the Prole section is much more dangerous than writing in his diary.
