This quote exemplifies the theme of hopefulness. The women depended upon their husbands and knew if they lost their pride or will to succeed, they would become hopeless. Despair has been the ruination of many. In most cases the women held the families together, but the men were the breadwinners. Hopefulness was dependant upon both.
