Winston Smith is the thirty-nine year old, protagonist of the novel. He is a Party member, he works for the Ministry of Truth, and although he outwardly shows Party allegiance.... he hates them. Over the course of the novel, he falls in love, rebels against the Party, is captured, tortured, and in the end.... becomes a brainwashed, compliant, member of society.
