Winston knows that the party's take on history is largely fabricated. Even recent history is changed and manipulated: it is Winston's job to do so. Winston, however, is a man of intense intellect and wants proof. He wanders into the prole section to look for the oldest man he can see. He buys the man beer in exchange for historical information. This falls apart as the old man only references prole type information rather than historical facts. Winston is still convinced that much of the early history has been altered by the party.
