In context, his trust is foolish. Winston's reckless behavior, which is fueled by his attraction to Julia leaves him vulnerable. Unfortunately, this same vulnerability is evident in the majority of his interactions. Winston is easily misled..... consider his misplaced trust in O'Brien and Mr. Charrington, as well.
