O'Brien is Winston's mentor, friend and father figure. He's a very intelligent man, who actually helps to draw Winston into the movement. Unfortunately, in reality, he is devoted to the Party and is responsible for turning Winston in..... he even takes on the role of Winston's torturer. At frst, Winston can't believe it because O'Brien helped to ignite his interest in the Brotherhood. O'Brien played on all of Winston's weaknesses to trap and punish him, and in the end, Winston continues to see him as his mentor...... he comes to accept and believe everything he's been told.
