Winston feels an abject sense of helplessness and revulsion to the Party. He spends his days in a nihilistic funk tossing around hypothetical ideas about revolt. Winston loathes the control the party has over every part of his life. The party forces Winston to repress his sexuality, his intellect, and any strong emotion. In a fit of despair and and desperation, Winston scribbles in his diary, "down with Big Brother.”
