At what were the people in the theatre laughing?

The people in the theatre were laughing at a war film, probably a newsreel. Their main source of laughter is an obese man swimming away from a sinking ship..... a man in a helicopter shoots him with a machine gun as he's swimming. This seems to serve as a source of entertainment. Makes you wonder.......
