Tsotsi (Davis) serves as a symbol of apartheid itself. Apartheid in South Africa is responsible for the destruction of Black South Africans’ lives, regardless of whether or not specific indviduals haven't experienced racism directly themselves. In the novel, we see the way that many of the characters' lives are negatively impacted by apartheid laws, even though they have little or no contact with racist white people. Tsotsi, for example, lost his mother as a youngster when police gathered and arrested Blacks who were suspected of residing or working in white areas without a pass. As a result of these laws, Tsotsi found himself homeless, and he went onto join a gang.... his entire life changed by Apartheid and its effects.
