Patrick is described as exhausted, quiet, and drinking more than usual. He drank his first glass of whiskey and quickly made another. This, of course, was also strange, as his wife generally made his drinks and waited on him after he arrived home from work. The way Patrick speaks also tells us that his wife is not used to him being short or harsh with her. His brusqueness takes her off guard. Lastly, Patrick tells her that their marriage is over..... something that is completely unexpected, but something that explains his behavior. We are, none-the-less, shocked that this man who was so lovingly described by his wife..... a wife who is six months pregnant, can be so cruel.
