Why did Jim carry the papers to Dr. Livesey? What did they contain?

The packet contained the Captains papers and a treasure map. Jim brought them to Dr. Livesey to keep them safe.
"No, sir; not money, I think," replied I. "In fact, sir, I believe I have the thing in my breast pocket; and to tell you the truth, I should like to get it put in safety."
