Why was alcohol a significant part of the fur trade? What was the ethical dimension of alcohol and the Fur Trade?

The coureurs des bois (French traders) gave alcohol to the Indians in exchange for their furs. Alcohol increased their profits. The colony was divided into two camps: those who supported the trade in alcohol with the Indians and those who denounced it as dishonourable.
