    How does Théoden's leadership affect the morale of his people? Conversely, how does his death affect the morale of his people?

    Théoden's charge is described by Tolkien as reminiscent of the Vala (god) of the Hunt, Oromë. It is little surprise, then, that the rest of the Eorlingas are greatly heartened in the presence of their leader. Similarly, when Théoden is killed, it is a grievous blow, and the Rohirrim must regroup under new command. Théoden's involvement in the Battle of the Pelennor fields reveals just how much leaders – especially beloved ones – can matter during battle in Middle-Earth.
