Is Denethor a good ruler, in your estimation? Why or why not?
In many respects, Denethor is a strong and capable leader. However, he can also be strong-willed, and has grown suspicious and jealous of his power. This fact is alluded to by Gandalf himself, who pointedly reminds the Steward that the day may yet come when the King returns, and on that day Denethor will have to give up his rule. This tension between the duties of Denethor's office and his possessiveness of that office will come into play later.
