The Fly (1986 Film) Imagery

The Fly (1986 Film) Imagery

Corporate

After going to Seth's laboratory for the first time and recording a part of their conversation, Veronica takes her scoop to Stathis, her editor. Cronenberg shows a shot tilting up the face of a corporate building. The imagery creates an understanding that Veronica's story has to do with selling magazines. The better the story the more magazines sold, the more sold the more money; and the shot of the exterior of the building helps us to understand Veronica's motivations are capitalistic as well as journalistic.

Inside Out

Cronenberg shows us a baboon being turned inside out by the teleportation device. The imagery is horrifying and represents the extreme danger that Seth is working with in his experiments.

Fly

Seth decides to go through the telepod himself and we see a fly, one tiny little fly inside the machine. The imagery represents Seth overlooking the finer details and being too emotional about his decision to go through, and how this spec can become a major problem.

Peeking Through

We see course, fibrous hairs coming through Seth's cuts on his back, and Veronica touches them. This imagery foreshadows the fly coming through him.
