    In discussions and written assignments, students will understand the power of non-fiction, memoir, and personal observation, and the renewing properties of self-expression.

    Students will understand the importance of hearing from people who are marginalized in society, and how the words of those who are weakened by prejudice can be a powerful weapon against repeating mistakes of the past.

    Students will become comfortable seeing historical figures as human and will recognize that no human is solely a symbol of anything.
