Torque is the time rate of change of angular momentum. When the external magnetic field is reversed, the atomic magnetic moments flip over to align with the external field. This also reverses the associated atomic angular momentum (Figure 28.26). This changing angular momentum exerts a torque that sets the cylinder rotating about its axis.
