The cardinal signs of inflammation are heat, redness, swelling, pain, and loss of function. Loss of function is sometimes considered a secondary sign of inflammation because it is usually due to swelling and/or pain. Fever is not a sign of inflammation. Fever is usually due to to trauma, infection, drug reactions, and other causes.
