Second Best Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Mole (Symbol)

The mole in the story symbolizes the love that sisters feel. Frances wants to kill the mole, or (symbolically) to kill the love to her previous man, and Anne is only bitten by this mole. She only then starts to understand what love is. The boy who promised to take her on the journey with him, but took a servant instead of her, offended Anne so much. So, the mole symbolizes love, but this love affects sisters differently.

Film (Motif)

While reading the story, we can imagine that we are watching a film. All situations are detailed, every emotion is described very thoroughly that we can even feel the same thing. “Their eyes met, and she sank before him, her pride troubled. He felt uneasy and triumphant and baffled, as if fate had gripped him. She smiled as she departed”. Also dialogues are written as in play or in a film. There are not grandiose, but express all the specter of emotions and let us understand what particular character keeps in mind.

Killing (Allegory)

When Tom asked Frances to kill the mole, it meant to kill her love to Jimmy, to kill those feelings she had for him. He wanted her to do it because he loved Frances and dreamed about the day when she would be his woman. “Tom was ready to love her as soon as she would show him”. Finally, Frances killed the mole and it symbolized that she could already be with Tom.
