Second Best Irony

Second Best Irony

Falling for the same man

Frances and her sister Anne are fond of Dr. Jimmy. When Frances returns from Liverpool, she looks forward to settling down with Dr. Jimmy. Anne is also thinking about how to win the doctor. Paradoxically, Dr. Jimmy is engaged to a different woman, and Frances learns that with disappointment.

The satire of Anne’s actions

While Anne and Frances are walking in the fields, they encounter a mole. Anne decides to kill the mole without any good reason, and Frances is disappointed with her actions. The satire is that Frances also stops caring about the mole’s death when she feels that something has died inside her.

The paradox of love

The reader realizes in the entire text that love is complex, but it offers a second chance. When Frances realizes that Doctor Jimmy is engaged to another woman, she is heartbroken and thinks the world has ended, but she forces herself to move on. Ironically, a few days later, Tom proposes to marry Frances. She quickly agrees, and they move in together.
