    Tone

    Kind of Activity:

    Classwide Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will be able to define tone and identify language that characterizes the tone of this story.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3.d

    Structure:

    Briefly go over the definition of tone in literature.

    Some ways to describe tone include formal and informal, intimate and subjective, or impersonal and objective. Tone may be serious or playful, mocking and satirical or sincere and assertive. Make a list of possible tones in literature, and then ask students to choose ones they "feel" she has created in this story.
