Peter comes clean to the bosses that he just doesn't care about his work. Instead of it causing him to be fired, he gets a promotion.
"So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life."
Peter says this to Dr. Swanson about the reality of his life being a black hole, to which his job is sucking away every bit of joy from his life. The statement encapsulates the theme of Mike Judge's film, that the cubicle job has become our life-source and most don't realize that it doesn't actually provide any nourishment.

Peter says this to Joanna while she is trying to take his lunch order. He's let go of any of his need to have an obligation towards the things society says he has to do. He is letting go of the fear of not measuring up in society and living carefree, and it helps him to get a date with Joanna.
