Why does Milton burn down the Initech building?

Lumbergh decides to cramp files into Milton's already small cubicle. Then he moves his desk into the basement, in a move that clearly states that Milton is disposable. Lumbergh even turns the lights out on Milton, who only seeks to do his job and be treated fairly, which to him would simply be to be left alone. Thus, being placed in the basement is the last straw for Milton and he decides that if he is treated with this type of ingratitude he can no longer allow it; thus, he burns the building down.

Why does Peter get a promotion from the Bobs?

Peter has decided that he just doesn't care anymore about his job. He is tired of working, even tired of paying bills. So, he decides to be in complete opposition to what defines proper behavior in his workplace in order to allow the opportunity to be let go. Ironically, Peter is interviewed by the higher ups, the 'Bobs' and they find his candor to be refreshing and exactly what is needed and keep him on. This leads to Peter removing a wall from his cubicle so he can have a view, parking in Lumbergh's spot and completely disregarding any of his boss' orders. Ironically, all of these things are what lead the Bobs to giving Peter a promotion.

What is the significance of Peter's breakup with Joanna based upon her sleeping with Lumbergh?

Peter learns that Joanna has slept with a man named Lumbergh. He then assumes that this Lumbergh is the same man who has been bearing down upon him at work as his incompetent boss. This disgusts Peter and causes a fight between he and Joanna which leads to their splitting up. What is significant about this is that Peter has been living his life in such a way that he cares about nothing, that is until he discovers Joanna sleeping with Lumbergh. Thus, this incident which occurs sparks into existence the fact that Peter has not lost his desire to care, and that caring is vital to ones ability to move forward and grow in life. It also reveals his jealousy when it comes to light that the Lumbergh she slept with was in fact not his boss.
