Students read the rest of the novella (Parts V & VI).
Daily Lesson Objectives
• Reading well: appreciating the achievement of the author by examining how each theme culminates and interlocks with other themes, and how the author combines tone, dialogue, suspense, and dramatic action to carry the reader’s interest.
• Thinking well: using the discussion questions to interpret the text and evaluate the characters’ actions, and to consider whether George’s actions are justified; assessing the likelihood of alternative depictions of an event.
• Speaking well: developing oral skills through vocabulary development, debate, individual presentation, and group discussion.
• Listening well: developing a taste for good grammar and strong diction; evaluating oral arguments and presentations.
• Writing well: creating and sustaining a descriptive essay, using evidence, in essay form.
• Understanding: seeing how the themes regarding loneliness, unfulfilled dreams, social inequality, and fate have culminated in the dramatic events that conclude this novella.
