Quantitative

What academic areas are you interested in exploring in college?* (200 words)

As much as I’m interested in the technical aspects of data science, I’m more intrigued by why a data result. Why New York City has higher covid cases than Atlanta; why Biden defeated Trump. I want to understand how human lives work, through numbers. Understanding the socioeconomic, geopolitical, and all the sociological backgrounds resulting in a datum is my utmost interest.

Staying in Dunwoody for the summers, I was always curious why it was so difficult to see people of color at Dunwoody, while they were seemingly the majority near Centennial Olympic Park. An understanding came by studying urban geography for my Human Geography class: racial residential segregation is visible through data and explainable via past actions of redlining and blockbusting.

At Emory’s QSS major with a concentration in sociology, I want to take Racial and Ethnic Relations, learning of past segregation policies and visiting formerly redlined sites in Atlanta. I’ll drive by fourteenth street to North Avenue, between State St. and Marietta St., where was noted by the banks: property in this area, if acquired, should be sold promptly. Through the unique QSS major Emory offers, I want to understand the world around me.
