Wat effect does the veil have on Mr.Hooper's outlook?

Mr. Hooper becomes the symbol of sin and atonement. He becomes a Christ-figure of sorts carrying not only his own sins but the sins that the town has projected onto him. Mr. Hooper becomes less himself and more a martyr to his cause, suffering to atone for himself and for others as well.
