From this quote, we learn that Rochester's marriage to Antoinette was a business proposition. He married her in order to receive the thirty thousand pounds she inherited from her with a purpose stepfather. In essence, Rochester is willing to admit that he was the one who sold his soul to satisfy his greed. Antoinette was a woman, who'd become a source of monetary gain for her husband.
