In the summer before Cullen's senior year, a birdwatcher named John Barling thinks he spots a woodpecker thought to be extinct since the 1940's. There is much excitement and even hysteria around the re-discovery of this, " Lazarus Woodpecker". The small town seems to be rediscovering itself but the atmosphere is more of a carnival than an introspective one. Children are getting woodpecker haircuts and woodpecker burgers are being sold.
