What does Thoreau mean when he says that the "mass of men lead lives in quiet desperation" is this still true today?

Thoreau means that the masses or general population lead constrained lives. They do not know what freedom is because they are slaves to their jobs, materialism, and the trappings of the world. They quietly lead lives desperate for meaning and purpose.
