In front of the cottage? If so, they hear music, "a faint, surprising wisp of music...a tinkling little melody", coming through the trees. Winnie's grandmother calls it "elf music", Winnie thinks it's a music box, and the stranger, though he doesn't say, seems to have heard what he's been waiting to hear.
