Mrs. Peters thinks their ruminations about the dead canary would sound silly to the men. Mrs. Hale replies under her breath, “Maybe they would—maybe they wouldn't.”Mrs. Hale understands Minnie's plight represents the problem of most women to varying extents. She knows male dominance and patriarchal culture has a hold on women. Men accept this dominance and expect subservience from women.
