What is Cole's attitude to animals and nature when he first gets on the island?

In Chapter two, we see Cole is still insecure and manipulative. He understands little about the natural world. He claims that if he sees a bear near his camp, he will "kill it". Cole boasts that he is not afraid of dying. Cole thinks he has nothing to learn about his place in the natural world.
