“Cole’s mother dusted the imaginary specks off her dress, and then picked up a feather hesitantly, without saying anything.

This tells us that Cole's home was not a happy place. Mother is furtive and nervous about speaking. We get the sense that she is scared of Cole's father and sad about what Cole's life had become at home.
