In what way has Cole's mother changed?

Over the course of the novel, we see many changes in Cole's mother. He biggest change comes in taking responsibility for standing back and doing nothing while Cole was abused by his father. By the book's ending, she has given up drinking and is working through the regrets she has about her own part in Cole's problems.
